FAQ

What is this?

Enter an ISRC to find its MLC composition registration. The MLC (Mechanical Licensing Collective) is the US body that collects and distributes mechanical royalties for compositions. It publishes a bulk data feed of its registrations that this tool uses. Cover art is fetched from Deezer’s keyless public API.

How does it work?

In its raw form the source data often has recordings linked to more than one work registration, complicating results returned from a simple search. This tool analyzes those links to reduce the noise and determine a suggested best match.

A confidence rating reflects how clear that match is, based on how far it leads the alternatives, how much of the total it makes up, and how many links there are overall. A strong match on a heavily populated registration scores high. One with only a handful of links scores lower. When two registrations tie for the most-matched, there’s no clear winner, and it’s flagged as a tie.

This is an independent tool built on public data, not affiliated with or endorsed by The MLC in any way. It’s built using The MLC bulk data feed, so may not reflect the current state of The MLC public database.

How accurate are the results?

Treat results as a lead, not a ruling. It’s a suggestion drawn from a third-party snapshot, and is only as accurate as the underlying dataset. Always verify against your own sources before acting.

Who built it?

I build tools like this one to help rightsholders get more from their data. Open to consulting and new projects in the space.
